They glide in their tanks like silver ghosts, which is what they're in danger of becoming.

Since 1995, the Leon Raymond Hubbard Jr. Marine Fish Hatchery in Carlsbad has released 1.4 million white sea bass into the ocean, helping replenish supplies of the once-abundant fish.

The hatchery is part of the Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute headquartered on Mission Bay. The nonprofit researches marine animals and their environment.

The Carlsbad hatchery is the only facility in the world dedicated to restoring the population of white sea bass, a species that lives along the Pacific coast from Alaska to Baja California.
