Today in memory of Dawn we are doing a tribute to her before the first Believe show at each of our three SeaWorld parks. This has been an extremely difficult time for the entire Shamu family. We believe that Dawn would want our work with these whales, that she loved so much, to continue. So with that in mind, we dedicate our shows this weekend to our dear friend.

My thoughts are with Dawn's family during this difficult time. Let us remember she lived her dream, how many of us can say that?
When my middle son was little, he was very interested in Orcas. I will never forget his excitement when he was able to see them up close at Sea World San Diego. This was truly an educational moment for our entire family as well, and we continue our love for these beautiful animals.
Tillikum has spent the last 28 of his 30 years in captivity. Would he really be able to survive on his own? I trust the experts at SeaWorld will come to a humane and thoughtful future for this Orca. No one can predict the thoughts of any animal, large or small, and sadly, Dawn was there during a wild animal moment. She wouldn't want Tilli to pay the price for what comes natural to him.
Keep things in perspective, honor Dawn by what she dedicated her life to helping - the Orca whale.

I too would have love to work at Sea World with the dolphins and whales. This is a sad thing that happened. By when you work with animals of any kind, wild especially, you take the risks that are inherit with working with them. There are many deaths of people who ride horses not to mention getting injuried. So then we stop riding them or owning them? No, if you are passionate about animals you will embrace those risks to be with the animal. Sympathy and blessings to Dawn's family and friends.

My thoughts and prayers go our to Dawn's family and her associates as Sea World.
While what happened is a tragedy, I am very relieved that Sea World is not choosing to euthanize Tilikum. While most of the Orcas at Sea World are captive born, they are still wild animals. Those that work with them day in and day out know that, and understand the risk. From what Dawn's sister has said, this was her DREAM JOB, and she loved these animals like they were her children. I think she would agree that Tilikum should be allowed to live.
To those who think the Orcas (and other animals at Sea World) should be released. That just insn't feasible. These animals wouldn't know how to survive in the wild. Most of them were born in captivity. Remember Keiko? His release ended in tragedy. He would've been better of being cared for in a place like Sea World.
Most people who post about Sea World exploiting animals clearly don't understand all that this company does. People....go to the park and take a behind the scenes tour...look at the rehab facilities....learn about how they have rescued and rehabilitated Turtles, and Dolphins, and Manatees, and birds, etc.....
Yes, this company makes money off of these animals, but at the same time, they have changed the way that MILLIONS of people look at sea life. It's because of the magic of Sea World that children and adults alike develop a love of Orca and Sharks rather than a fear of them.
I can still remember my first visit to the park as a child, and wanted to become a marine biologist or Veterinarian so I could work with the Orca. I never realized that dream, but still wish I had. I would take the risk to make a connection and interact with these beautiful and intelligent animals.

What happened to Dawn was a terrible accident. But I am hearing of talk about "freeing Tilly" and I can't believe it. Look what happened when they "freed" Willy. He died of lonliness. That was the saddest thing I ever saw. You can NOT free an animal once it is so dependent on humans. I can not speak for Dawn, but I am sure she would not want to see Tilly abandoned in the ocean. I agree, the tanks are not big enough, but at least he is loved and cared for in a manner he is used to now. Freeing Tilly would only give him a death sentence for sure. That would be a terribe tribute to Dawn!

What a fantastic tribute. It displays the love, happiness and passion Dawn had for her animals and her job. I can go through my photos from Sea World and see those same expressions in Dawn's face in every picture. Unparalleled love for this magnificent creature written all over her.
The real tribute will continue to come for many years, just as it has with Dawn in the past. It is evident based on the interviews, that she has established an unprecedented foundation of leadership and knowledge for her fellow trainers and anyone she has worked with.
To all the activists and readers who are posting all your negative comments or standing outside with your signs reading "Boycott SeaWorld" and "Release the Whales" Perhaps you need to consider the full spectrum of what SeaWorld is about. I don't see you posting blogs or holding signs that say "Stop rescuing and rehabilitating the animals" or "You should've let those 15,000 animals die in 2009". It's far more than collecting the almighty dollar...what they give back is huge.
Focus your energy on saving the animals who are still unprotected in so many areas around the globe.
Sea World will continue to have our support in everything they do.
God Bless Dawn and her family.

I totally agree with your comment. I believe Tilly either wanted to play (since he isn't involved with the shows...maybe he was jealous and had his moment to spend), or he mistaked her hair for a fish, but doubt that, OR her hair got tangled in his teeth and neither could release it. They aren't showing actual footage of the incident so it's hard to create the image...SW IS at fault though for allowing him to be so close to her/in the water with her when they KNOW he is only for show and breeding. Either way, I am almost positive it was not intentional harming, he just seems to be in the wrong places at the wrong time.
Dawn obviously loved her animals and took way more than pride in her training. God Bless her and her family for...yes, it was tragic. Stinks, really, but she made some wonderful memories I am sure.

Seaworld has always been a favorite place of mine. I commend them for their research that could one day save these animals from extinction. I think the whale maybe wanted to play with her and how is he to know we can't breath under water like he can. He is a whale. He didn't know. Someone also made the remark earlier, their suits make them look like whales. He seemed to like her very much and I am sure he will miss her. My heart goes out to Dawn's family. She really looked like she loved her job and the animals she worked with.

I would like to say that I get really tired of all of the people who say they are worried about animals in captivity. You should really be thinking about the woman who lived her dream by being close to these animals and teaching people about them. Everyone has an agenda and believe that the only opinion that matters is their own. If you look at the big picture you will see that yes, these are beautiful creatures and yes, they are wild animals. You should also see that the majority of them are no longer whales from the wild but those that have been bred in captivity. Sea World has not captured wild whales for many, many years. To release them into the wild would be a death sentence. This was proven by the whale from the Free Willy movie. He was "rehabilitated" to be released and died because he could not make it on his own. Before trashing Sea World on their animals you should look at their example and do something with your life that may better an animal's life. They adopt animals from the shelters that other people throw away. The next time you think about how horribly they treat their animals, look in the mirror and ask yourself " what have I done to help the life of another creature." Thank you Dawn for showing us that dreams can come true and for teaching us so much about the animals that you loved so much!!

I'm truly sorry for Sea Worlds loss of a wonderful trainer as Dawn. Through the pictures we see on TV, you see the love that she had for these animals. This is a hard time for all involved and would just like to say to Sea World...
Sea World you are handling this situation with class and dignity.
Dawn's family will be in our prayers for they are the ones left her with the great memories. With the love and sacarfice that Dawm made for these animals she is in heaven with God.
May God grant peace to all those that are affected by this tragedy.

My deepest regard to the family, but honestly, Sea world should let all the whales go, it's just natural instinct to do what he did. It's not his fault, it's just natural instinct. He's probably just playing but really rough like other male whales do. Don't euthanize him, let him free! It's the best thing anyone can do for him, or get him at least a bigger tank!

My condolences to Dawn's family but I have to say that this tragic accident is a mere result of an animal that has become so distraught with living in a bath tub that he is left with nothing else to do but explode with voilence. I have a tear in my eye looking at his living conditions; fine he is fed well and given the best medical attention possible but think of the life that has been taken away from him.. his natural life in the wild. Even if his life in the wild was brought to a quick end with all the challenges he would face, if he could choose, it would be a day in the wild than a life in captivity. It leaves you with no questions as to why he is turning against humankind, I know I would if I were him. I won't pretend to know who Dawn was but I don't believe this show would be a tribute to her, a tribute to Dawn would be to give something back to Tilly, living conditions that were set up for "Free Willy" star could be replicated here. Don't you think?

I was born and raised in Central Florida and have lived here my whole life. I have been to Sea World COUNTLESS times and have seen Dawn perform with the whales many times. I always got goose bumps and tears in my eyes seeing the smile on her face and the genuine LOVE she had for the whales. You could FEEL it. It was evident in every show and in every picture you see of her interacting with them. She was truly living her dream. Many people will never be able to say the same.
God Bless her family and friends. And may her memory live on through the others who continue the good work at Sea World.

It is very sad what happened to the seaworld trainer,my deepest sympathies go out to her family. At the same time everybody needs to keep in mind the challange they took on dealing with oversized wild mammals. I hope the thought of letting it to the wild or putting it down does not cross anybodys mind. It is bad enough do to our growing population we overcome any land space our beautiful wild animals have to go, they wander into residential areas and the only thing law enforcement does is kill them off. They were here before we were. They have the same right to live and feed as we do. God help them all.

Since hearing this tragic news, it has haunted me, I have become completely obsessed by it going over and over the footage available. I have only been to Sea World once and it has remained my "special place" we visited the day after our wedding 14 years ago, and I hope one day to return. Shamu Stadium was of course our favourite and we went to every show.
From watching the footage, similar to what the gentleman said about possibly going for her hair thinking it was a fish and her hair possibly becoming tangled, I think this is also quite plausable. Or maybe he just wanted to play with her? Its clear from the footage shown seconds earlier, they had a very special relationship, I dont see that he was trying to hurt her, just possibly wanting to be close to her?
I think the girl trainers do now need to wear either their hair short, or some kind of diving hat, also would it be possible for them to have some sort of oxygen equipment attached to their leg in case of an emergency like this?
The last thing that concerns me is that the diving suits are made to look like the markings of a killer whale, could that confuse the whale making them think they are one of their own? I thought it was better before when the suits were black and red, clearly distinguishing between them.
My thoughts go to all of the Shamu family at this time, and of course Dawns family.

I was saddened to hear the news about the recent event at your facility. It is sad for both the trainer and the whale. The trainer lost the ability to do what she loved doing. The whale is suffering at the bad press people love to hurl in instances like this. I just feel it was an overall tragic accident.
Per the request for a pair of fresh eyes from the news conference held and shown on CNN recently, I offer this insight that haunts me. I did not see the clip of the tragic interaction between the whale and the trainer. What I did see was a clip of her dangling fish to eat from a high area, like an open basket. The whale just jumps up to catch the fish.
Then I hear of how the whale just went for her hair. Her long, beautiful hair that looked in many ways to me like a long flopping fish I had seen in the earlier clip I described above. Would the whale have thought that he was being offered more food, and jumped for it? It is a thought that I had, and was wondering if it was a consideration.
As a result of capturing her hair, it coulld have become entangled in his teeth, and then hard to undo. Not like a smooth piece of tape we use to clean between our teeth. As he opened his mouth to try to release her, she might have been sucked in by the force of opening the mouth. When he closed it, she might have got caught in there briefly.
Yet, if he wanted to kill her, she would not have been pulled out of the wather. He would have had her for lunch like all the other fish he swallows. At least this is the way I see it.
Thus, I do not see him as a whale that kills. If he was, he would have done it before. The guy who jumped in the tank with him, I am surprised he is not receiving credit for doing the wrong thing. Instead, the whale is being blamed.
I am not exactly for keeping animals in captivity, yet I understand we need to find a way to live together. From what I see and hear, the whales are given room to live. Like they say, they would not be multiplying if they were poorly off. In fact, they would likely not be living! One way I see it is they earn their keep by having them perform once in while for us. Like I am constantly told, we all have to work! :)
Thus, I hope this whale continues to be part of your family. If the suggestions mentioned above is part of the reason for this recent tragic event, may I recommend that the trainers keep their hair short by either trimming them short, or tying them tightly back, even wearing a cap when in direct contact with the animals, so neither of them suffers from any future tragedy.
Keep up the fine efforts.

I think it is a totally mercenary and shameless business to continue these killer whale shows in view of the loss of life. But this is another business, where profit trumps all! It is a disservice to these wild animals and to those who would risk their lives to work with them. Where was the emergency response training? There probably was none. It sounded like no one was willing to go into the water under any circumstance to save this girl, and they were just chasing the whale around the pool with nets. It's disgusting and uncivilized--like placing Christians in the arena in Roman times with wild animals. What a waste of life! I and my family will never visit SeaWorld again. Richard Belgrad, M.D.

I don't expect someone who hasn't dedicated their life to these animals to know much about the living habits of orcas, but I did want to add that releasing these animals into the wild in many respects is not an option. They lack the skills needed to actually hunt for their food, and although their vitamins are sometimes supplemented due to the loss of vitamins during the flash freezing process of their fish, they may in fact lack the needed digestive tract to process live food as well. Not to mention, Orcas are pod animals and they exist in very strict social groups. It is highly unlikely a released killer whale could adapt into one of these pods, forcing himself to be a loner and vulnerable to all kinds of risks because of his/her isolation from the stability of a predatory group. Essentially, releasing them would condemn them to death.
There are many laws in place to protect future marine mammals from being captured in the wild without strong conviction. The Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 is just one of the many legistlative acts passed to protect these animals in the wild.
It is through these animals being in human care, that we are able to educate the public on how to properly respect whales in the wild. They are well fed, cared for, get excellent medical care, and are adored by their trainers. I can only hope when my time comes, I have lived as full a life as Dawn Brancheau. She understood, and dedicated her life to a strong mission, one that will live on for decades and centuries to come. May God bless her family, friends, co-workers, or anyone who's life has been touched for her warm heart and tenacity for life. She will always be remembered.

That was a beautiful sentiment you expressed but I still feel the whales should be located in Iceland . One death is too many and there have been more .Yet no known deaths reported from any wild whales . God created them and didn't intend them to be canned and canned is the only word really ..up in bath tubs ,this is done purely for money by Sea World .Not enough stringent rules were in place to protect the trainers , if they had been this would have not have happened ! It is time for Sea World to relocate these wonderful creatures and find a better place for them to get them some happiness , we get to retire shouldn't we give whales the same courtesy . Dawn's memory will live on and maybe teach Sea World some new lessons .

The best tribute to Dawn would be to release your killer whales and stop exploiting them for your own gain. These are wild animals meant to live in the wild, not enclosed in pens that will never be large enough to truly accommodate them. It's a tragedy that another life was lost because SeaWorld can't accept the fact that this practice needs to come to an end. SeaWorld, you should consider truly caring about animals and the lives of the trainers and release these poor creatures back into the wild. These animals are trying to tell you something and you are simply ignoring it out of your own greed. It's heartbreaking.

To all the trainers and workers of Seaworld, Dawn's family & friends, and of course Dawn herself in spirit.
I have been lucky enough to experienced Seaworld Orlando many times, and each time I go back it is even more special and incredible to me. The bond between trainer and animal seen is amazing and so beautiful. I have seen both Dawn and Tilli working together 2 years ago and could see that they both loved each other. Tilli is not bad, and none of the whales who live at Seaworld are unhappy. Every one makes mistakes, every one does things on retrospect they do not mean or realise they are doing and every one has bad days, even Orca's. Tilli is, and will remain my most loved whale at Seaworld, no matter what has happened. Dawn loved that whale and I believe still does. To see Tilli, your breath is taken away with his sheer size and power, his characteristic flopped dorsal fin is what allows me to pick him out of the bunch every time I see him. Infact, Tilli was the first Orca I ever seen, a gentle giant. Orca's want to be closer to people and play with them, hug them even. We cannot make assumptions on what Tilli was feeling that day, but perhaps he wanted to show Dawn his world. For those who believe captivity for these creatures is wrong, it is not cruel, entertainment longing humans who are caging these creatures against their will. It is cruel, entertainment longing humans who are hunting these animals down for sport to kill them. Why do you think Orca's are an endangered species? If it were not for Seaworld and their battle to keep these beautiful animals alive, would there be any left? The shows show the Orca's doing what they love, you can see it in there faces, and it is not "tricks" they perform, they show off their natural behaviours which would be done in the wild. So infact, these whales are not only being given the chance to live in safety and conserve there species, they are doing what they love to do, with humans close enough to be considered family. If Orca's and humans can work together as shown by Seaworld, imagine what else can be done in the world. Those who have not experienced Seaworld do not have the right to judge or criticise the actions of such an amazing facility, if people cared truly about animals, they would understand how much the animals and trainers care for each other.
So thankyou Seaworld, for giving me the oppurtunity to have a glimpse into the world of the Orca, and allow me to appreciate the beauty of our planet, and what can be done if we just Believe.

I am appalled by the utter disregard and disdain that Sea World "Entertainment" has for the people working for them. Clearly the death of a trainer is considered collateral damage measured against the financial windfall created by the orca's sperm. I sincerely hope that Ms. Brancheau's family files a massive negligence lawsuit against Sea World, especially given the fact that this is the third fatality caused by the same orca!!
To keep these magnificent, intelligent, and highly social mammals confined to a concrete pen for their entire lives is simply beyond the pale.
I hope people will take the time to think about this entire situation and not enable Sea World anywhere to continue to put its staff and the creatures under its care under such horrific peril. Boycott Sea World. All they care about is the bottom line and, clearly, at all costs!
Shame! Shame! Shame!

I would have preferred to record these comments in a more appropriate place on your website but I can't find any other space. I am sorry for the death of Ms. Brancheau. But I am equally troubled by the humiliation, subjugation and captivity of these beautiful animals that have been stolen from the wild. What arrogance human beings have to think they can subject creatures to imprisonment - what gives you that right? It is all very sad. The animals you currently imprison may not now be able to return to the wild but, please, don't take any more. Stop degrading these beautiful animals.

How are these shows displaying love of animals? The animals are kept in cramped unnatural tanks and are no longer able to survive in the wild even of they were released. Their life spans are one half of what they would be in the wild. Their dorsal fins are bent and deformed.
Did the owners of enslaved Roman Gladiators love them because they were fed and clothed until they were killed? At lest the gladiators had a chance and an hope of winning their freedom.
These shows will not teach your children anything good Melissa, only that creatures can be exploited and abused for fun.

I have always wanted to work as a Orca trainer in the Shamu show at Seaworld. I respect and admire all of the trainers for their love and dedication to the animals and to making the public aware of these beautiful animals in the Believe show. I had the wonderful opportunity to enjoy the Trainer for a Day program at Seaworld Orlando last March and got to go behind the scenes and see the true passion and dedication these people have for their animals. Also, not to mention the over the top cleanliness and sanitary conditions that they live in st Seaworld Orlando. Also the research and rehabilitation units are out of this world. Everyday I wish I could go work at any of the shows at Seaworld (of course Shamu would be my top choice) but I dont have a degree in psychology or biology =( I want to send my best wished to Dawn and her family. I have seen all of the Seaworld shows hundreds of times and I cant help but cry at how beautiful the interaction between Orca and human is and that we have the greatest opportunity to see such and amazing performance. I hope that Seaworld does not euthanize Tillikum but thinks about alternatives such as ocean pens w/ human care or maybe keep him for viewing only if the situation arises. I wish I could have been there for the tribute today but happy that the shows continued today! Please Seaworld and Busch Gardens keep the traditions alive forever because I want my children and generations on to be able to experience what I have all my life. Love and Peace Melissa! PS: Im getting ready for my Trainer for a Day at Busch Gardens this year and I cant wait!

Thanks to all of the wildlife worriers in the world and the staff of SeaWorld. You all do a fantastic job.
Only 50% of baby orcas make it past the first year. Breeding in captivity will help to enlighten folks about these beautiful animals. Education throughout the world will help to keep this species from being on the endangered list. Japanese whalers continue to destroy the whales of the ocean and ships like the Steve Irwin try to stop them.
If we all could simply “See the world from the eyes of a child”….
RIP Dawn’s and Thanks…

I am saddened and outraged by the loss of yet another person because of this particular animal. Sorry, but how many human lives does it take before we wake up and realize this animal is a danger? We're at 3 and counting. It appears that Sea World values the animal (and the almighty dollar) over people's lives. Completely isolating this animal in captivity would be cruel, and euthanizing it would be extreme as well, which is why this animal should be released back into the wild where it can take its chances and would pose no more threat to humans.

SW has always been a favorite place for us and we have attended the park in CA and well as in Fl. It has always been SO amazing to see the Whales and dolphins close up. I have always marveled at how the trainers interact with them.....it is truly amazing!! They are beautiful creatures created by a God who is love...and has given Dawn and the other trainers a love for each of the animals. Keep up the show and continue to show us these amazing creatures that God has created. We are praying for Dawn and her family!!
