Mom and Calf Pair Are Survivors of January Florida Freeze

SeaWorld’s Animal Rescue team released a female manatee and her calf – cold stress survivors of Florida’s unseasonably frigid winter – into the waters of Palm Beach, Fla. They are the first two manatees the park is returning to the wild after the animal care specialists performed seven cold-weather related rescues during a two-week span in January.
Dewey (9 feet long, 895 lbs) and her calf Barros (4 feet long, 205 lbs) were rescued from a canal in Vero Beach, Fla. on Friday, January 22. They spent the last five weeks recovering at SeaWorld’s Manatee Rehabilitation Center where they were treated by park veterinarians and animal care specialists.

SeaWorld is the global leader in the rescue and rehabilitation of manatees. The park’s Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation Team is on call 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Today’s release is a coordinated effort with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

SeaWorld should also give credit to FWC staff. They do most of the rescues in So. Fla. That's their boat and staff there. Also SeaWorld should give creadit to West Palm Beach Police Department that had 4 officers helping with the release (they are the ones with the other wetsuits-yellow and black, blue and black).

I think it is great!!! My fav. place to go on vacation is Sea World!!! I went to Sea World in Florida a few yrs. ago. Did not want to leave! I love it. The manatees are one of my fav. animals at Sea World. I love how they float to the top of the water to get air then sink back down, while they are sleeping!!!!! They are so big, but graceful at the same time! I love to learn about all the animals there. The work that is done there is so very important. You can learn so much just from one vist. I do not just walk and look, I really try to learn what I can about the animals. The trainers were so nice and answered all my questions. My family is planning on a vacation to Sea World in San Antonio this summer!!! What yall do is remarkable!!!!

Great job…. Thanks for all the hard work.
I know some folks complain and criticize SeaWorld for having animals in captivity but then these same folks never give you credit when you save, heal and release injured animals back to the wild.
Keep up the efforts.
Thx.
