The Busch Gardens Animals Carve Pumpkins for Halloween

by Staff

The animals in Busch Gardens’ Edge of Africa enjoyed carved pumpkins during the week leading up to Halloween.

Different treats that appeal to each animal were placed inside the gourds. Lions and hyenas were tempted by meat. Ring-tailed lemurs sought grapes, while meerkats were after mealworms. Hippos love fruit, but Kita enjoyed playing with the buoyant pumpkin for a few minutes before smashing it and eating it.

Busch Gardens zookeepers used the seasonal fruit as enrichment for the animals and to vary their diets. Enrichment items such as food and toys are used daily by the zoo team to keep the animals engaged and stimulated, both mentally and physically.

This Halloween weekend, Busch Gardens welcomes guests to Howl-O-Scream by offering a special price of $19.95 per person for Howl-O-Scream admission for this Sunday Oct. 31. Guests can purchase this special price at the Front Gate or by purchasing online HERE.
